Are first instincts usually right?
The answer to this question is yes and no. Your purest intuitions are always right but those tinged by your own thoughts and emotions may only be partially correct or even completely wrong. With practice, you can learn to assess your intuitive experiences and identify when they are more likely to be right.
The reasons for why we tend to stick with our initial answers is that the feeling of regret we experience when changing from an initially correct to an incorrect answer is unbearable and we tend to remember these salient instances better than instances where we changed an answer to a correct one.
Do not âsecond-guessâ yourself. Answer questions in your head first, before looking at answers on test. Mark questions you can't answer immediately, and come back for them if you have time.
There's no hard and fast rule. An essay may take a great deal more time for someone to finish, so our department usually encouraged students to do the multiple choice first to get the most points possible, then approach the essay.
Study after study shows that when you change your answer in a multiple-choice test, you are more likely to be changing it from wrong to right than right to wrong. So actually sticking with your first answer is, on average, the wrong strategy.
You know your intuition is around when you say things like, âI can't really explain it, butâŠâ or âIt just felt rightâ or, more likely, âIt just felt wrong.â Intuition can feel like this âwoo wooâ thing, but experts back it up as valuable. It's our past experiences and learnings feeding us information in the present.
Remember, the expected likelihood of each option being correct is 25%. And on tests with five choices (say, A, B, C, D, and E), E was the most commonly correct answer (23%). C was the least (17%).
The idea that C is the best answer to choose when guess-answering a question on a multiple choice test rests on the premise that ACT answer choices are not truly randomized. In other words, the implication is that answer choice C is correct more often than any other answer choice.
Our advice to students, based on the present study as well as past research, is straightforward: âReview your answers before turning in your test. If you think your initial answer is wrong, and another response is correct, change your answer!â
Many people place second-guessing at or near the top of their list of agonizing effects of anxiety. At best, it can knock down your sense of inner peace and happiness a notch or two.
Is it cheating to look up before the test answers?
If you know the answers before the test because the teacher decided to give everyone a study guide worksheet which you worked on prior to the test and the teacher then used the same questions from that study guide worksheet for the test, then no, this is not cheating.
- Practice self-compassion. ...
- Think back to your past achievements. ...
- Try not to compare yourself to others. ...
- Spend your time with supportive people. ...
- Remember, you are your biggest inner critic. ...
- Seek professional help. ...
- Start journaling.

Going with your gut: decision-making based on instinct alone 90% accurate of the time, study shows. Psychologists at Tel Aviv University's School of Psychological Sciences surprisingly found that decision making based on instinct has surprisingly positive outcomes.
You may have heard that âwomen are always rightâ regarding intuition. And while this may not be true all the time, research has shown that women are more likely to trust their gut instinct than men. For countless generations, intuition has protected and supported us as we step into brave new adventures.
- You're Somehow Always Right. ...
- You Have Vivid Dreams. ...
- You Have Nagging Thoughts. ...
- You Often Stare Into Space. ...
- You Pick Up On Everyone's Energy. ...
- You Seem To Know Things Before They Happen. ...
- You Experience Synchronicities.
You'll be right 90% of the time. For centuries scientists have studied how both instinct and intellect figure into the decision-making process. A new study has shown that forced to choose between two options based on instinct alone, participants made the right call up to 90 percent of the time.
